Today’s fortune: “Luck will visit you on the next new moon.”
Luckily for all of you, today was not a new moon or else this blog and my life would have been shut down by Powerball winnings. The next new moon is February 8th here in the Windy City, so now I am looking forward to that day, but this Powerball though…
The Jackpot was $1.5B which came in at roughly $960MM take home for the winner. Let’s talk about that for a minute shall. Actually lets not, its a disgusting amount of money, enough to refund Nasa, cure cancer, end poverty or buy a small country.
I thought about Luck after reading this fortune and it’s often something I think about a lot. I would be one of those people that puts themselves into two lucky buckets. The first is the topical luck: good parking at Target, I find things, I win things, I hit lucky shots, have positive experiences with people, and often get the “next customer in line” to this register invitation. I am sure all of those things will abruptly stop as soon as I hit publish on this blog but so be it.
The other, more important, “Luck” is the meta level. First of all everyone close to me in my life that is still here has made it this far. I think about this little tidbit in regards to that element of luck:
Translation- you are lucky and I am lucky if you are reading this- go on mother f*cker. So there is that. In that vein I feel lucky or blessed that I have what I have in this world. A family that I have chose (my wife and kids) and one that was given to me (my parents and siblings). A group of friends that support me and feel supported by me.
The biggest focus this year to be happy for the achievement of others and not let jealousy creep in. People in your social network make a few million through a buyout- celebrate with them don’t think why not me. Someone has a killer vacation don’t think how do I get there, think ask them how it was. Big promotion, don’t compare, etc etc etc… That is the mantra this year, not jealousy but sharing and admiring the success of the people around me. That will make me lucky.
